Japanese universities are known for their huge number of clubs (サークル). Sign language, cocktails, cosplay, manga... if you can think of it, there's a club for it. Joining one of these clubs, the Keio Chess Club, has given me lots of opportunities and experiences that other exchange students who have not joined a club just will not get. The most interesting experience so far has been helping at with the club's Chess Cafe at Mita-sai, a Keio University festival where all the clubs set up stalls throughout the campus or give performances.

Being part of the chess club, I got to see both sides of Mita-sai: in front of the counter and behind the counter. As fun as it was exploring the stalls, I think I had more fun as staff at the cafe. As well as playing chess with students from other universities, I also had the opportunity to teach chess to members of the public, from businessmen to elderly women.

There is a definite sense of belonging in being part of a team working towards a common goal which I think can sometimes be hard to get as a foreign exchange student. I would certainly recommend foreign students to join a club and to give Mita-sai a go from the other side of the counter.

I enjoyed reading your submission :-)

I'm glad to know that you have enjoyed Mita-sai on both sides!
Your idea about foreign exchange students is brilliant! I hope you will have great experiences in Japan.

I visited your Chess Cafe, but I couldn't talk to you. I'm looking forward to seeing you next time I visit Keio University ;-)
